Moving House with Pets: How to Keep Your Dog or Cat Safe and Calm

For pets, a home shift is confusing. Familiar furniture disappears into boxes, strangers walk in and out, and the routine they depend on is suddenly gone. With a little planning, you can make moving day much less stressful for your dog or cat — and for yourself.

Before the move

  • Visit your vet. Get a general check-up, make sure vaccinations are up to date and ask for a copy of your pet’s health records. If your pet gets anxious or travel-sick, ask the vet for advice well before the trip.
  • Update ID tags and microchip details with your new address and phone number.
  • Bring out the carrier or crate early and leave it open with a blanket and treats, so your pet sees it as a safe space rather than something scary.
  • Pack gradually. Packing a little every day is less disruptive than turning the house upside down in one evening.
  • Keep routines steady — the same feeding, walking and play times as far as possible.

On moving day

Moving day is when pets are most likely to get scared, slip out of an open door or get underfoot while heavy furniture is being carried. Keep your pet in one quiet, closed room with water, food, a litter tray or bedding and a familiar toy, and put a sign on the door so the crew knows not to open it. Better still, leave your pet with a friend, family member or a trusted pet boarder for the day.

Pack a separate pet bag that travels with you: food, bowls, leash, medicines, waste bags, litter, a favourite toy, a blanket and the vet records. Never put pets in the moving truck.

Travelling to a new city

  • For road trips, use a secure carrier or a car harness and stop every few hours for water and a short walk (for dogs).
  • Never leave a pet alone in a parked car — temperatures inside rise very quickly.
  • For flights or train travel, check the airline’s or railway’s pet rules well in advance, as they have their own requirements for crates and documents.
  • Feed a light meal a few hours before travel rather than just before leaving.

Settling into the new home

Set up one room with your pet’s bed, bowls and toys before letting them explore the rest of the house. Check balconies, windows, gaps behind appliances and the garden gate for escape routes. Keep the same feeding and walking routine, and give your pet a few days to adjust — some pets eat less or hide for a while after a move, which usually settles as they get used to the new space. If it doesn’t, check with a local vet.
