Bangalore gets most of its rain between June and October, and sudden afternoon showers can arrive even outside the main monsoon months. Moving during this time is perfectly possible, but water is the biggest risk to your belongings — a few minutes in the rain can stain a sofa, warp wooden furniture or damage electronics. Here is how to plan a rain-proof move.
1. Watch the forecast and plan the timing
Check the weather forecast a few days before and again the night before. In Bangalore, mornings are often drier than late afternoons during the monsoon, so an early start for loading usually makes sense. Keep some flexibility in your plan, and talk to your mover about what happens if there is a very heavy downpour.
2. Use waterproof packing materials
- Wrap sofas, mattresses and upholstered chairs in plastic sheets or stretch film after a layer of protective covering.
- Use good-quality, thick cartons and seal every seam with strong tape so water cannot seep in from the edges.
- Put clothes, linen and books inside plastic bags before placing them in cartons.
- Use plastic crates for items that absolutely must not get wet, such as documents and small electronics.
3. Give electronics extra protection
Pack TVs, laptops, speakers and kitchen appliances in their original boxes if you have them, or wrap them in bubble wrap and then a plastic layer. Keep important cables in labelled zip bags. Carry laptops, hard drives and important documents with you instead of sending them in the truck.
4. Protect wooden furniture
Wood absorbs moisture and can swell or develop marks. Wipe furniture dry, wrap it in blankets or corrugated sheets and then a waterproof layer. After the move, unwrap wooden items as soon as possible and let them air out in a dry room rather than leaving them wrapped for days.
5. Keep floors and pathways dry
Lay old sheets or cardboard at the entrance of both homes so wet shoes don’t make floors slippery for people carrying heavy items. Ask your society if the truck can park close to the lobby or under a covered area to reduce the time goods spend in the open.
6. Unpack carefully
Once you reach the new home, check every carton for dampness before storing it. Open any box that feels wet straight away and dry the contents. Run fans or keep windows open in rooms with furniture that was exposed to humidity.
